In Memory of Evelyn Sylvia Birrell 1933 – 2019

Sylvia Birrell passed away peacefully on 23 June 2019 in Kenton-on-Sea. Sylvia was the eldest in the Fowlds family, trained as a Home Economics teacher and began her teaching career at DSG in the 1950’s. After marrying Harry Birrell in 1957, Sylvia moved to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) and then back to Pretoria. By the time the Birrell family returned to Grahamstown in 1972, there were two children – Adrian and Debbie – and it was not long before Sylvia returned to DSG as Deputy Head under then Headmaster, David Wynne, and began a life that was dedicated to DSG and its pupils.

A mentor, a tutor, wise counsel, a good listener, a fair but firm facilitator, Sylvia was loved by all, mainly because of her huge capacity to love and forgive, to understand, and to engage a delightful sense of fun.

Indeed, a woman of substance.

Colleen Rippon (sister to Sylvia)
