READING CAMP DURING THE HALF TERM BREAK 2011

The Holy Cross Reading Camp is an annual children’s camp administered by the Brothers of the Mariya  uMama  weThemba  Monastery of Grahamstown, and held towards the end of June at Assegaai Trails. The weeklong camp teaches English in a more holistic manner, and gives each person that attends a true appreciation for books, learning, and most importantly reading!

Reading Camp is an amazing project to be a part of, and will never be forgotten by anyone who attended, either as an ‘adult’ or as a camper. This Camp is only made possible through the love and devotion of a group of people, headed by Kary McConnochie and her committee, and the Brothers of the Mariya uMama  weThemba Monastery. Months of planning, organisation and fundraising go into each camp.

This year, an incredible 9 out of the 12 counsellors were from DSG and SAC including Sim Xeketwana who is a Xhosa teacher on the staff, bearing in mind that Camp ran for the duration of the half-term. The Counsellors of this year were a dedicated and efficient team, with everyone working towards the goal of happy, healthy kids who value reading! Thanks must go to each of the counsellors, as everyone’s role was vital in making camp run as smoothly as it did! The Counsellors of 2011, Martin Chandler, Ben Stelitz, Savanna Rado, Lila Kelly, Kath Barnard, Ruth Driver, Katy Harrison, Unathi Mabukane, and Chumani Nkwinti, our 18 campers would have been lost without you and your dedicated hard work!
