Gold is rare
Many girls at DSG are enrolled on the Presidents Award Program. Few, however, achieve a Gold.
Megan Howard, DSG’s Grade 11 pupil, achieved truly remarkable results. She had been enrolled on the program at her last school in Namibia and was able to pursue it here. The four components she had to complete were: One year of community service totalling over 72 hours, a residential project, completed in Prague, Czech Republic, skills development and physical recreation.
“Some of the many things the Presidents Award has taught me is how to persevere,” Megan explained. “The award goes through stages, making it tough to get your Gold. It has taught me to push myself beyond my comfort zone and to see it through to the end as Gold is the ultimate achievement. The Presidents Award is an inspirational way to learn about others, in the community service section or in the residential project (required for Gold); and more about yourself, through the skill followed and in learning to give back to the community. Presidents Award has made me the person I am today, in the effort to see it to the end I have grown as a person,” she said. “The President Award gives you the ability to help others, see new cultures, see the world and it gives you the opportunity to make the best of a situation. This is a part of my life now, and I do not want it to end. After the Gold Ceremony in PE this past weekend, I am now a member of SAGAHA (South African Gold Award Holders Association). I hope to encourage others to obtain the same level of Presidents Award as it is an unforgettable experience.
