MUSIC
There are several opportunities for musical participation and development at the DSG Junior School. Regular singing forms a foundation to all other musical activities with a twice weekly sing-along for the whole school. In these sessions we prepare for special occasions such as the annual inter-house Music and Dance competition, the Carol Service, or perhaps a special variety concert in which every girl takes part. The Junior Choir is a smaller group of committed singers who perform at the eisteddfod, at concerts and on short tours. The other important ensemble at the DSG Junior is the Junior Orchestra, which combines with our brother school, St. Andrew’s Prep. Rehearsing in the DSG’s vibrant music auditorium, girls are encouraged to take their orchestral instruments seriously and are exposed to the fun (and challenge) of playing in an orchestra at an early stage. The Orchestra performs at both schools, particularly at special occasions like the Easter and Christmas services. Individual lessons are offered on many different instruments, and girls have the option to work toward music exams which provide an excellent goal. Regular Junior Open Concerts on Saturday mornings provide a nurturing performance space for those ready to play their pieces, with those taking their earliest steps on their instruments to those who are our high fliers and who dazzle us with their talent, taking part.
