Herald Cycle Tour

Rosemary Bailey from the Diocesan School for Girls joined three St Andrew’s College pupils, James Tennent, Jon-Jon Emary and Paul Fick and teacher Andrew Maffessanti and participated in the 2007 Herald Cycle Tour on 3 February.

“After the ritual carbo-loading and an early night the pupils and I awoke to an uncharacteristic south westerly for this time of year. Gusting at 30 knots it aided the cyclists return journeys,” said Maffessanti. “This was Rosemary\'s first race of over a 100km distance which she completed safely and comfortably in a time of 3 hours and 47 minutes being the 84th female out of 200 past the finish line. This was a very respectable time considering that she set-off from the back of the field.”

With 30km from the finish, Tennent had to practice his puncture repair skills and finished in 318th position in a time of 3 hours and 9 minutes averaging a speed of 31.7kmph, while Maffessanti completed the 105km route in a time of 3 hours and 39 minutes.

Emary and Fick joined 318 other cyclists on the 46km route. Both returned safely home in impressive times of 1 hour 39 minutes and 1 hour 51 minutes in 77th and 179th positions respectively.

This event marks the build-up towards a final preparation of a training plan for the Argus Cycle tour in Cape Town in 5 weeks in which St Andrew's college is likely to have 15 to 20 participants.
