Maths camp aptly timed
Fifteen Grade 12 pupils from St Matthew’s School, based near Keiskammahoek, have travelled to Grahamstown to participate in an interactive Maths Camp hosted by St Andrew’s College and the Diocesan School for Girls. Anna Jacobs, Mathematics teacher, tabled the idea to host St Matthew’s learners in their school holidays from 8 to 13 July to assist with preparations for their Grade 12 mathematics exams.
The timing couldn’t have been better according to Community Engagement Officer, Barbara Scott. “Due to recent strikes the visiting pupils are extremely pleased to be able to receive one-on-one attention from Anna who is one of our top teachers, as well as assistance from Grade 12 learners from St Andrew’s and the DSG,” said Scott.
The group of 15, which includes 13 girls and 2 boys, were selected on academic merit and are already benefiting greatly from the tutoring. Science, Life Orientation (with a special focus on CVs), Computer Science and English tutoring are also part of their intensive programme as well as the opportunity to experience boarding school life.
“We are hoping that this will be an annual project,” said Scott. “Over the last three years, St Andrew’s and DSG have been benefited from a strong relationship based on historical ties. Teacher and pupil visits between the schools are frequent and seeds are continuously being sown for future joint projects.”
On 13 July the group will return to school and dive straight into exams so their effort to attend the maths camp during their holidays will hopefully bear fruit immediately.
