MUSIC TOUR

The music tourists travelled to Johannesburg on Tuesday before half term.  Three intense days of concerts and braving Gauteng traffic gave the 48 young musicians a work out before they could put their feet up for half term. Four ensembles, the Wind Orchestra, Senior Orchestra, Jazz Band and Chamber Choir performed at several prep schools, braved playing in Sandton Square in the chilly wind, but were warmed by the supportive friends and family and the enormous Mandela statue. Bagpipes opened and closed most of the concerts, with piper Andrew de Blocq accompanied by three drummers drawing the crowds and setting the scene.  The final concert was held at The Ridge School for Old Girls, OAs, parents and friends of the schools.  Mike and Marianne Lovell hosted this concert and many thanks go to them for their amazing support.  Debbie Horak set up concerts for us at the lovely new Greenstone Mall and Sandton and smoothed the path for us in innumerable ways. What would we do without wonderful parent support?   The huge strength of our music department is the variety on offer and whether it was Hayley Jackson’s  beautiful rendition  of the theme from Schindler’s List for solo violin, Nicci Horak and Jemimah Kibirige’s duet with orchestra from the show Wicked or Rick van Heerden’s original compositions for the Wind Orchestra, there really was something for everyone at every concert.

SUNDAY – KENTON FUN RUN:

The DSG prefects organized a fun-run from Grahamstown to Kenton in order to raise money for the DSG Unite project - each runner had to raise at least R50 to particpate in the event. Girls organized teams that ran in a relay formation from Grahamstowon to Kenton via the Southwell road. Each girl ran a leg of approximately 5.5km with some girls opting to tackle two or more legs. A total of 55 pupils (and 3 SAC boys) took part in the run with support from 8 staff members. It was huge success with the school reaching Kenton at 1o’clock just in time for lunch and a quick swim in the icy sea.
