Blood Donors - Thursday 8th May

Life of Blood and Paint:
By day Krystal Kruger is a second-year fine art student at Rhodes. An example of her work hangs in a building in the sprawling grounds of Settlers Hospital.

Why Settlers Hospital?
Kruger is a volunteer medic and ambulance assistant at Netcare 911 which has its base in the same building as the laundry near the entrance to the hospital. She works over weekends and the occasional night shift on weekdays. When I visited the base last Friday evening she had attended lectures during the day as usual, gone on duty at 7pm and was due to work a 12 hour shift with shift leader Adrian Erasmus and other permanent staff members. Knocking off duty at 7am last Saturday she would have made her way to her digs in the Oatlands area to sleep for a few hours. Then at 12h30pm she reported to the astro turf on campus with her 3rd team playing partners for their Eastern Province women’s hockey fixture against Pirates from PE. She is goalkeeper for the team. Last year Kruger painted the interior of one of the ambulances used by Netcare 911 in Grahamstown as part of a project in her fine art studies.

She hails from Kenya and spent her high school years at the Diocesan School for Girls in Grahamstown, matriculating in 2006. She has been a volunteer medic with Netcare 911 since March last year.  After completing her four-year fine art course at Rhodes, Kruger plans to study further to become a fully-qualified paramedic.
