Bekgeveg
The annual Afrikaans public speaking event, Bekgeveg, took place last Thursday and produced a record number of speakers. The standard was very high and the judges had a hard time deciding on a winner. The topics were controversial and well prepared. Special mention was made of Jaco Delport, Ian Fraser-Jones, Renier Steynberg and Melite Vivier. Michael Rushmere won the Junior First Additional Section with his speech on whether the boy or the girl should make the first move. Debbie Brennan won the Senior First Additional Section with a speech on why South Africa is such a wonderful country to live in. The overall winner and winner of the Home Language section was Tim Abel with his speech on the traditions at our schools and whether there is still a place for some of them. Congratulations to all who took part and thank you to all that supported the evening.

The theme this year was “Know the past, pursue the Future”. The pupils of the three schools put together a fun-filled and entertaining programme and the Guest Speaker was Mr Athol Trollip of the DA. The Heads of all the schools were presented with gifts. Youth Day celebrations formed part of the Open Day held at the schools. Many local people, as well as visitors from far and wide, visited the schools’ campuses and the day culminated with a lunch at The Highlander.
