READING CAMP

The Tuesday reading group went out to a farm last weekend where they spent Friday night and Saturday with 18 junior school children selected from underprivileged schools in the area. The time was spent reading and playing games with the children to help improve their English.

KNIGHT SHIELD TENNIS

The 1st Team (Top 8) and U15 (Top 4) took part in the Knight Shield against Kingswood and VG. After beating VG convincingly the girls had to play Kingswood on Wednesday to decide the winner. It was a tight match with DSG coming out on top with a 7-5 victory to secure the trophy.

QUADRANGULAR TENNIS

On a very hot Sunday the 1st Team Tennis again took on VG and Kingswood in conjunction to Union to contest the Quadrangular trophy. DSG took convincing wins over Union and VG leaving the Kingswood match again as the decider. The girls took another hard fought win to secure their second trophy of the week

Kingswood took both trophies away from DSG in 2008 after DSG had retained them for many years – it is great to have them back! Well done girls and thank you to Mr Eksteen and Miss Tzircalle for all their hard work during the season.

President's Award

Congratulations to Mary-Anne Brown who has attained the Bronze Standard for the International Award for Young People through the President's Award and to Catherine Bennett who has attained the Silver Standard.

Undefeated Water Polo Champions:

ROWING – SA CHAMPS

The DSG Rowing Team competed at the South African Schools Rowing Championships held in Pretoria last weekend. Jenienne Curr and Kayleigh Scheepers set the tone for the weekend by both making the A finals in their single sculls on the 1st day of racing. Jenienne finished off the day by winning the U15 Girls singles Final and thus becoming South African Champion in her age group. The open first pair of Louis Sommerlatte and Kirsten Scheepers also performed well and were in the hunt for fourth place before a boat breakage in the last few 100 metres put an end to their race.

On Saturday Jenienne and Kayleigh were back in action, this time together in the double. They annihilated their competition, winning by 10 boatlengths and in so doing they broke the South African Record for that event, by 3 seconds. They are both now South African Champions in their age group and South African Record holders. The open 1st double of Abby Robertson and Fiona Sanderman unfortunately narrowly missed out on the A final, however they won the B final by 5 lengths and their time in that race would have placed them fourth overall in the competition. Liz Vorster and Lucy Beckett surprised everyone in the doubles race by coming second in their heat and making the B final. They are a second team double, but were out giving all the first teams food for thought. They finished 6th in the B final.

On Sunday the 2nd quad of Lucy Beckett, Cath Andrews, Amy Roux, Liz Vorster and Laura Robertson took on the other schools in a newly formed division specifically formed for second teams. Their dedication and commitment showed as they raced side by side against other girls who narrowly missed out on making first team in their own schools. A crab in the last 200metres of the race unfortunately gave their fourth place away and they finished 6th.

The 1st Quad of Rowing Team; Abby Robertson, Kirsten Scheepers, Louise Sommerllatte, Fiona Sanderman and newcomer Elizabeth Abel showed true bravery and self belief when they came flying down the course amongst the other first team crews. For the first time ever, the DSG quad was up amongst the leaders and hunting for glory. The girls bravely pushed for home earlier than the Clarendon 1st Team and in so doing set another first for DSG. They beat the Clarendon 1st Quad to the line by one boat-length and in so doing are now ranked fifth in the country.

DSG Rowing Club placed fifth out of all the girls schools on the weekend, beating Clarendon who have dominated the Eastern Cape Region for many years. As a result DSG is the best girls rowing school in the Eastern Cape and amongst the Top five girls schools of the entire country. Well done to all the DSG rowers who sacrificed early mornings in bed, countless weekends out and two whole Half Term Breaks! Thank you also to the school for allowing them to pursue their sport in such a professional manner, I think everyone will agree that it was all worth it.

Squash

The following girls played in the Free State Open which is a qualifying South African Tournament.

In the U14 section Brittany McCreath ranked No. 3 and Melissa Thompson was No. 5 - both these girls are currently in the top 10 in South Africa.

In the U16 section Nicole Ware was ranked No. 23.  This is Nicole's first year in this age group and she met with some very strong competition.
