CITATION: HONOURS: HOCKEY
Micah Steytler has played hockey for the DSG for 5 years and for the 1st team during the last 3 years.
In her time at DSG Micah has played for Makana, Albany, Cacadu and Eastern Province. She is the most capped played in the history of the school amassing 69 caps for the 1st Team. During this time she has consistently been the top goal scorer each season scoring over 80 goals in her time at the DSG.
Micah did not miss a single match and her commitment to the club has been exceptional. During her last season she captained a young inexperienced side leading them to an exceptional season.
Micah is a deserving recipient of the Award, Honours for Hockey – Congratulations.
CITATION: HONOURS: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Ashleigh Hayward has a long association with Community Engagement at DSG. She joined the Interact Club in 2006. She has served as an Interact board member and treasurer from 2007. In 2008 she was voted Interact Vice-President and has served as a faithful and invaluable board member for 2009. In this time she has also been involved with the Presidents Award and has just received her Gold Standard Award. To qualify for this level in Presidents Award she completed 72 hours of community service as well as a residential project. This determination to remain engaged with outreach work has also been a part of her clubs choices. She has done reading assistance for three terms, computer assistance for one term and doll making for one term.
Over the years she has been a part of many of the DSG outreach projects. She initiated and organised the Interact Bakathon event in the first term. She has been involved with the St. Matthews Make-over project, the Graeme College valley clean-up, the Lavender Valley clean up project, the organisation of G-town Spunk, the street collections for St. John’s and Fort England, the numerous Interact tuckshops for Saturday sport, the visitation of under-privileged schools in Grahamstown, in working at the SPCA, in knitting squares for charity, in the organisation towards the President’s Award Fun Run, many Saturday School sessions along with the annual Christmas Parties, the yearly Interact Beach Bonding, dance marathons, movie evenings and garage sales.
In the holidays she has undertaken visits to her local old age homes, visited local primary schools and assisted with some lessons. Ashleigh has raised and donated money to her local SPCA. She has given clothing and food to a children’s shelter and undertaken a residential project at the Parsonage Street Home.
Ashleigh has shown a deep commitment to helping others in community service work. This has been demonstrated at school but also in her own community. It is therefore a pleasure for me to nominate Ashleigh for the Honours Award for Community Engagement.
