Designer in Residence, Richard Hopkins
St Andrew’s College was privileged to host Richard Hopkins as our Designer in Residence this week. Mr Hopkins spoke to classed in the Design and Technology Centre throughout the day and delivered a public lecture in the evening.
Richard Hopkins studied Fine Art and Graphic Design at the Pietermaritzburg University and Mechanical Engineering and Production Management at the Port Elizabeth Technikon.
He has worked as a consultant in the packaging industry for the past twenty years for local and international companies. He has gained vast experience in the basic principles and practises in the manufacture of all packaging materials, in the recycling of materials and in sales strategies in the packaging industry.
The ViscoDisc is one of Mr Hopkins’ designs and is something many will have come across when opening a jar of pepper dews. The ViscoDisc is the plastic insert placed in the top of the jar so that the product can have a longer shelf life and be exported without any oxidation or discolouration to the fruit in the bottles.
Richard Hopkins has won several awards from the Institute of Packaging South Africa, and the World Packaging Organisation for his contribution to the industry.

Junior Women’s Championship Russia 2009
Cayley Tonkin, a pupil of the Diocesan School for Girls began the experience of a life time. Along with 12 other girls who were proud as can be representing their country, they set off for our 13 day water polo tour in Russia. “One cannot explain the profound feeling that is experienced getting off the plane wearing your own green Protea blazer. It brought a great sense of warmth and belonging to our team and we knew we had to make our mark the “Proudly South African” way!”, said Cayley.
Eight days of solid playing showed them how deep they had to dig to make their mark. The top 16 sides in the world were competing for the number one position making this tournament unbelievably competitive. The intense level of competitiveness showed some of the greatest water polo. “I am lucky, yet honoured to have represented my country and more importantly my school at such a prestige event. Although we came back with a 12th, we also came back with a great sense of sportsmanship and a broader knowledge for a sport we loved. Russia was a life experience that I will never forget!” said Cayley Tonkin who enjoyed the Championship in Russia.
DSG Arbour Day
The DSG Grade 8 Merrimanites embarked on an arbour day activity with grades 3s and 4s from Samuel Ntlebi Primary School as part of DSG's community engagement program. The DSG girls engaged with the learners in discussing how plants grow and the importance of trees to the environment, and donated two posters and two trees to the school, which they helped the learners to plant.

Sarah Blunden was recently placed third in the national Fantastic Plastics competition run by The Plastics Federation, South Africa. The aim of the competition was to encourage learners to learn about the benefits of using plastic over alternative materials, and to consider the environment by increasing their awareness of the use of plastics and the potential to recycle this material. Sarah's project which looked at 'Plastics on the Move' was a beautifully presented investigation into the use of plastics in various modes of transport.
