REGIONAL SCIENCE EXPO

 

On Friday 16 July, 31 Grade 9s from St Andrew’s and 33 Grade 9s from DSG attended the Grahamstown Regional Science Expo.  The St Andrew’s projects came home with 2 gold awards, a silver award, 5 bronze awards and 5 merit awards.  DSG were awarded 5 silver awards, 3 bronze awards and 6 merit awards.

 

Chris Brown and Matt Arnot with their project “Single Sex vs Co-ed Classes” which was awarded a Gold Award and judged the 3rd best project overall.  This project involved an extensive survey of teachers and learners at DSG and St Andrew’s, asking them for their opinions on single sex and co-ed teaching and learning environments.  They looked at the perceived effect on marks, attitude, behaviour and enjoyment of lessons.

 

Matthew Danckwerts did a project on “Oleocellosis in Citrus” which was also awarded a Gold Award and placed in the top 6 projects.  He investigated the effect of temperature at the time of picking citrus fruit on the development of oleocellosis.  This is a discolouration of the peel which can make fruit unsuitable for export. 

 

Sam-Sam Mrubata and Nakisa Quma did a project entitled “Dyeing Hair”, which was awarded a Silver Award.  They were also chosen to represent Grahamstown at the National Expo.

 

Chris, Matt, Matthew, Sam-Sam and Nakisa will be attending the National Science Expo in Pretoria in October with 10 other learners from Grahamstown.

Andrea Barnard & Kelsey Schnell with their project “How Sweet is your Fizzy Drink?” which was awarded a Merit Award.

 

 

 

Megan Joyce & Nicola Wilson with their project “Battery Saver” which was awarded a Merit Award.

 

 

 

Rachel Hunter & Alice Hutchinson-Keip with their project “Colour My Life” which was awarded a Bronze Award.

 

 

 

Diana Glennie & Lihle Tshongwana with their project “Artemisia Afra” which was awarded a Bronze Award.

 

 

 

Kelsey Horne & Jana Pellissier with their project “Quickest Reaction Speed” which was awarded a Silver Award.

 

 

 

Christina Georgoulakis & Lisa Woker with their project “Does Caffeine increase or decrease your heart rate?” which was awarded a Bronze Award.
