DSG Girls and staff received ashes on their foreheads from the chaplains during their Ash Wednesday Service.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a 40 day period, known as Lent, of preparation for Easter. This period mirrors the time Jesus spent in the wilderness after his baptism. During this time, in some Christian traditions, people choose to fast by giving up some luxury or something that they enjoy. Their chaplain reminded the congregation that fasting in Lent is not simply an act of personal piety, or a way to test our inner strength; nor is it an opportunity to lose weight, to save money for ourselves. ‘Giving up’ might be changed to ‘giving out’ by way of acts of compassion and love to heal a broken world.
