DSG CAREERS DAY – WEDNESDAY 25 MAY 2011
The fifth DSG Careers Day was held last Wednesday 25 May on the school campus and a record number of 40 institutions and career personalities gave presentations to over one thousand matriculants from all schools in the Grahamstown area. And this is spite of wet and icy conditions!
PricewaterhouseCoopers has been sponsoring the event since it started in 2007. The money from PwC goes towards taxi expenses for disadvantaged pupils and other overhead expenses. It is not a fund-raising venture for the school, but a service DSG provides to the pupils of the Grahamstown area.
All faculties from Rhodes University were in attendance, as well as the Rhodes Careers Centre which gave advice to current matriculants. NMMU and other colleges from Port Elizabeth have also been attending the Careers Day since 2007.
Additionally, there were institutions from as far afield as Jo’Burg, Durban and Cape Town.
Newcomers to the Careers Day were Capsicum Culinary Studies, CTU and IT Service Training, Micro-lending, Overseas Visitors’ Club and Quest Africa.
Mr Jonathan Fordyce (son of Comrades Champion, Bruce Fordyce) gave presentations on his gap year visit to Australia last year, where he acted as a stooge at a school and coached sports.
Senior State Advocate and DSG Old Girl, Nickie Turner, gave an enlightening and informative talk on Law. Also a DSG Old Girl, Mrs Fiona Meihuizen gave an interesting presentation on Medicine. Fiona has been practising Medicine over in the UK and has settled in Grahamstown with her husband and family.
Other careers of interest were Physiotherapy, Psychology, Pharmacy, Engineering and Human Kinetics and Ergonomics. May gap year institutions also gave presentations. These included many companies offering overseas opportunities as well as locally-based institutions. Study VISAs are arranged by the companies offering overseas ventures.
