The Pipe band travelled to Durban during the holiday to compete at the South Coast Highland Gathering on 27th and 28th April. Arriving on the Wednesday before the competition allowed the band to put in three days of intense practice leading up to the weekend. With the help of Old Andrean Thomas Fuller, the band was able to make strides in advancing their playing ability.
The band competed on the Saturday in two divisions; the Novice Juvenile U19 section, where they were placed 3rd in the March Strathspey and Reel, as well as the Open Grade 4 section, where they were placed 2nd in the MSR.
Solos were held on the Sunday, with some very good performances as can be seen by the excellent results:
Esona Dyantyi: 1st Overall in Novice Snare Drumming
Africa Matshingana: 1st Novice Tenor Drumming
Likhona Rulashe: 2nd Novice Tenor Drumming
Murray Campbell: 1st Junior Tenor Drumming
Chris Pretorius: 4th U17 Piping
Arran Hepburn: 1st U17 Piping
3rd Open Silver Piobaireachd
The band can be proud of what they achieved. As a young band, they have laid a good foundation on which to improve and learn in the months and years to come.
